In Buddhist philosophy of Yogācāra, tongue consciousness is one of the eight consciousnesses and is essential for understanding how humans perceive and interact with the world through taste.
Tongue consciousness, or gustatory consciousness, refers to the ability to perceive and recognize flavors through the taste buds on the tongue. This sense allows us to detect a variety of tastes, such as sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
According to the Yogācāra school, tongue consciousness, like other forms of consciousness, is not merely a passive reception of external gustatory information but a manifestation of the mind. All perceptions and recognitions are deeply interconnected with the functions of the mind.
