Today, we can discuss the eighth consciousness in Yogācāra (Consciousness-only) - alaya consciousness.

In Buddhist philosophy, the concept of Ālaya-vijñāna, also known as the "storehouse consciousness," is one of the core tenets of the Yogācāra school. 

This concept not only profoundly influences the foundational philosophy of Buddhism but also offers significant insights into understanding the relationship between the self and the world.

1. The Concept of Ālaya-vijñāna

Ālaya-vijñāna literally means "storehouse consciousness" and can be understood as a kind of subconscious. It is believed to be the source of all experiences and actions, storing all our karma and memories. Whether positive or negative or non-positive and non-negative, all actions leave imprints in this subconscious, influencing our future behaviors and experiences.

According to the Yogācāra school, Ālaya-vijñāna is a very deep level of consciousness that is not altered by our surface-level mental activities. This means that our thoughts and behavior patterns are largely driven by this subconscious.

2. The Status of Ālaya-vijñāna in Buddhist Philosophy

In Buddhist philosophy, Ālaya-vijñāna is a crucial foundation for understanding the functioning of the self and the universe. 

The Yogācāra school divides human consciousness into eight levels, with Ālaya-vijñāna being the deepest, the eighth consciousness. The other seven levels include the five sensory consciousnesses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch respectively correspond to eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, and body consciousness.), the sixth consciousness (mind consciousness), and the seventh consciousness (manas consciousness).

The importance of Ālaya-vijñāna lies in its encompassing the other seven consciousnesses and serving as the repository of karma. It is closely related to the cycle of samsara, determining our rebirths and future experiences. Therefore, understanding and transforming Ālaya-vijñāna is considered a crucial step towards liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

3. The Significance of Ālaya-vijñāna

The significance of Ālaya-vijñāna lies in its revelation of the roots of our actions and destinies. According to Buddhist philosophy, all our actions leave traces in Ālaya-vijñāna, which in turn shapes our future experiences and destinies. Understanding the workings of Ālaya-vijñāna can help us better comprehend our behavior patterns and make positive changes.

Moreover, Ālaya-vijñāna emphasizes the concepts of impermanence and non-self. Since the contents of Ālaya-vijñāna are constantly changing, our sense of self and the world are also in flux. This reminds us not to cling too tightly to the self and the material world, but to learn to go with the flow and maintain inner peace and wisdom.

4. Applying Ālaya-vijñāna in Daily Life

The philosophical concept of Ālaya-vijñāna can be applied in daily life to help us better understand and cope with life’s challenges. Here is a concrete example:

Suppose you face a challenging task at work that requires you to complete a complex project within a short time. You might feel stress and anxiety. According to the concept of Ālaya-vijñāna, these emotional reactions stem from your past experiences and habitual thinking patterns. Perhaps you have felt failure or frustration in similar situations before, and these memories are stored in your Ālaya-vijñāna, influencing your current reaction.

Knowing this, you can take the following steps to transform your mindset:

  1. Observe Your Emotions: Recognize that your anxiety and stress come from past memories, not the present situation. This is a practice of "observing."
  2. Let Go of the Past: Remind yourself that past failures do not determine the present or future. This is the practice of "letting go."
  3. Cultivate a Positive Mindset: Through mindfulness and meditation, cultivate inner peace and confidence, believing in your ability to complete the project.
  4. Take Action: Based on the current situation, create a reasonable plan and steps, and complete the task step by step.

Such application can help you not only manage specific challenges but also gradually change the contents of your subconscious, making your behavior and thinking patterns more positive and healthy.
